In a match between Stoneywood Dyce Cricket Club and Crescent Cricket Club, held at Stoneywood Dyce’s home ground, the host won the toss and elected to bat first. Crescent’s aim was to restrict Stoneywood Dyce to a score of under 200, giving them a good fighting chance on a grassy wicket.
Just before the match, Crescent captain Nathan decided to work on his wicketkeeping skills, so regular keeper Alex was asked to run in the outfield. The opening bowlers for Crescent, Ayush and Anjum, started well, with Anjum taking two wickets in his initial spell. Kamal and Rajeveen then took over the bowling attack, with Kamal displaying consistency and picking up two wickets in his first spell.
Crescent managed to keep Stoneywood Dyce’s scoring rate under control, thanks to the bowling efforts of Pankaj Jr, who took two crucial wickets. In the field, Ali impressed with a direct throw run-out. Giby and Rajeevan also bowled tightly and maintained control over the run flow. Towards the end, Kamal and Anjum returned to the attack and each took a wicket.
Overall, Crescent’s skipper made good bowling changes, and the fielders supported the bowlers with excellent catches and fielding displays. Stoneywood Dyce finished their innings with a total of 148 runs.
Chasing the target, Crescent’s batting had a shaky start, with Rajeveen, the reliable batsman, getting out early followed by the quick dismissals of skipper Nathan and Shoaib. Alex was also caught behind the wicket due to poor shot selection. Suddenly, Crescent found themselves at 24 for 4 in 8 overs.
Ali took on the responsibility of anchoring the innings and played a composed knock, scoring 45 runs before getting caught out by their former player Umair Qureshi. Arun, Kamal, and Giby provided valuable support, bringing Crescent close to the target. Ayush also made a quick contribution with the bat. However, it was Anjum who showcased his ability as a fantastic finisher under pressure. With Pankaj as the last wicket standing, Anjum calmly hit the winning boundary.
It was a good game of cricket overall, and this victory took Crescent to the top of the SPCU Division 1 table halfway through the season.
In another game, Crescent Cricket Club were hosted by Master Blasters in a Grade 1 league match. Losing the toss, Crescent was asked to bat first. Captain Ankush experimented with the opening pair and had Jaimin open with himself, but this strategy didn’t work initially. Riyaz, batting at number three, couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity as well . Shubham “Superman” Sharma played a crucial role, holding the batting unit together for quite some time, but he was unfortunate to get run out in his 60s.
Crescent managed to score 154 runs on a low-staying wicket. The Crescent bowlers started well, with Bilal, Shubham, Vineet, and Vardhman giving their best efforts. They took wickets at regular intervals, but Crescent couldn’t turn the game in their favour due to too many extras and drop catches. These issues have been a recurring problem for the team in recent weeks.
With 8 wickets down and 15 runs left to chase for Master Blasters, Crescent still had a chance to win. However, a couple of minor mistakes proved costly, and Master Blasters secured the victory. Although Crescent players may be disappointed with the result, it was an enjoyable match to be a part of.
At the halfway point of the season, Crescent finds themselves in the relegation zone. However, they are determined to improve and have tough matches ahead. The teams higher up on the table should be aware that Crescent will come back stronger and more determined to climb up the ranks.
